This was a Hell of a way for the series to end. After Iwane did all of the key animation for #187-188 and action cuts for #189 to see him turn out perhaps his most impressive action cuts for a throwaway fight in the last episode was a real charm. Head Writer Tomioka Atsuhiro, Episode Director Asada Yuuji (who was also credited as one of two series directors for Episodes #171-191), and Animation Supervisor and sole Key Animator Iwane Masa'aki really were the golden trio that made Pocket Monster: Diamond & Pearl the best incarnation of the franchise yet.
Another cool factoid: Asada Yuuji directed and storyboarded five of the last twenty last episodes of the series. What a guy.
Which version is this though? Yamakan infamously re-edited this episode for the DVD/home release to lower the frame count as he was upset the animators went above the allowed frame count for the episode, thus going over budget.
Galap said: Why would he lower the framerate if they were already drawn? Just to be passive-aggressive?
Yeah, it was obviously in vain with the episode already done. If the animation director goes overboard and "wastes" too many resources (keeping that under control was Yamakan's job to begin with, no one tell him) then the damage is already done, no point in going back and changing stuff around. You could claim it's for the sake of consistency but a) who the hell blatantly lowers the quality of an episode so that it looks more like the rest of the show b) it's Kannagi, there's plenty of other instances of outstanding character animation.
