Producer Masao Maruyama said the main problem with making this movie now is finding a director that could live up to Kon's vision and legacy.

I’ve thought about this for five years, but what I finally realised we can’t do is let someone else take over where Kon-san left off and let [them] take up the reins. If someone else were to direct, it just wouldn’t be his film any more.

It's truly mind-boggling that this is just... what Kon's boards looked like. Sure he came from a manga background but this almost feels like an excessive amount of detail. A master of his craft to be sure
