Matsumoto's animation is incredibly smooth and his choreography is top-notch. If he was just better at staying on model he would be one of my favorite animators.

Well in the case of this particular cut, clearly the intention was to smear the characters in order to communicate speed. He's certainly done good on-model cuts before.

He always draws the characters in his own style and they look consistent throughout his cuts...so in a way he's pretty good at staying on model. I guess that's the trade-off so he can animate 5000 cuts a day. Besides, it's not like his drawings are sloppy. I usually prefer his renditions of the characters than the ones in the model sheets (like in Naruto for instance).

5000 cuts^a day wew, he can produce one entire cour in one day :p
