Yikes, that digital effect at 0:15 is pretty bad.

From what I remember, Rurouni Kenshin is full of them throughout the series. So at least it wasn't a sudden, bad choice for this scene.

By the way, wasn't this already up? I'm surprised.

I'd say it's more out of place than outright bad. Would probably fit more in an 80's style sci-fi series.
Was Norio Matsumoto going through a bad phase or something? He's developed so damn much

the direction is just very fast paced and maybe doesn't read as well without sound but there's nothing bad about this.. no need to be so harsh. He has had opportunities in other anime to show off in different ways and naturally like any artist he does learn and improve with time. The animation here is more limited compared to some of his work in hunter x hunter but it's probably due to the style of the boards more so than limitation in skill
Well, the storyboard of this ep was Kazuhiro Furuhashi, that is definitely not a bad director, and i don't see nothing especially bad here beyond the dated Digital Effects and a few Masahide Yanagisawa's corrections.
Honestly, I don't get all the hate about the digital fx.
There's a LOT of contemporary shows nowadays that have worse fx/composition problems (and remember that this was an mid-90's series)
These effects may not be perfect, but they are just fine for me, especially if you consider the extravagant/flashy style of the tv show.

I think the problem with this one is that it doesn't fit the look of the show.

The problem here is one of the main problems a lot of early digital anime faced: the coloring is atrocious. Those yellows and greens combined together are eye-searingly obnoxious, especially compared with the subdued monochromatic coloring of the rest of the sequence.

Indeed, and it results on a incredibly jarring, unpleasant to the eye mix, along with Masahide Yanagisawa's corrections on Matsumoto's drawings to fit the character models more easily, it kinda makes the scene ¿lose? quality.

i
I don't like the compositing either, but I find it not so egregious compared to most things like it.

To be honest, most of the times when anime looks bad visually to me, it's because something's badly composited
heh really? always thought that part looked cool.
they complain about nonsense. They are very used to shitty animation without details in the characters.
Norio is amazing
definetly, one of anime most important figures
I miss his action so much so much
