I hope we get more guest animators for SU.
real flat camera work for a fight scene though. Feel as though Takafumi could do better. Definitely better than the other fight scenes shown in. The keyframes flow better.
Hori did not board this sequence, just added extra breakdowns/animated the board he was given before sending to korea to be cleaned . It's just a different process but it really did come out very beautifully.. really cool smears on the spear
The first shot looks so awkward. Using a wide shot to show the entire body is a very hit-or-miss camera tactic nearly few ever pull off. The dead-space and steady, eye-level camera totally saps the energy from the scene. Hori's actual animation having no oomph behind the impacts doesn't help, either. It's like seeing two balloons lightly collide.
mmmmm I see what you say, floaty animation with lack of impact. I wonder if he had freedom with the storyboards. American shows use very detailed storyboards that don't let animators have some fun with the material.

I personally blame how "perfectionist" American media (as a whole, not just animation) tends to be. Though outsourcing it to a cheap studio like SIMP, who'd follow it note by note anyways (and who has zero grasp of what timing is) doesn't help.

Knowing Hori, they probably did give him freedom, but the Koreans fucked it over. Had the episode been full-out Trigger, it probably would have looked a little better than currently presented.
Until I see confirmation I wouldn't say with any certainty that this is even one of Hori's bits. Certain cuts during "Here Comes a Thought" clearly seemed to be his from the way they moved but I don't get that feeling here.

He is in the storyboard credits for the episode, so wouldn't it make sense that he boarded his own scenes?

that's wrong .. the pre-production is done in the US then for animation and layout done in korea, and btw koreans animators are dope you should do more research on them, Hori dose not have the freedom its based on SB and he can not do much about it so you should blame only U.S pre-pro team for the work,

they even storyboard using to boxes a shot it's so limited not how korean and japanese storyboard !

You remind me of someone and I don't know who. But to clarify:

the Storyboard and layouts are done in America (though in this episode's case, Hori assisted) before sending the animation out to Korea.

Also, I have seen Korean animation. It doesn't really impress a lot (like Dr. Movie's ACCA 13 episodes or most of SU).

The way the SU artbook presents it, Hori didn't actually do storyboards. Rather he did animation key frames based off of the the other boarders storyboards: The song sequence was boarded by Jeff Liu, while the fight sequence was boarded by Colin Howard (and undoubtedly with some additional boards from Rebecca and director Joe Johnston thrown in as well for both scenes). Not to downplay Hori's contributions though: a lot of the final ep's drawings are clearly based more off of Hori's keyframes than straight from Colin and Jeff's boards.

First of all. I cannot believe this conversation is still going on. And 3rd, I wish the storyboarding for this fight scene felt more..."intense".
In one of the 12 principles of animation, that would be Pose to Pose animation, Straight Ahead works well for elements like fire and water, Pose to Pose works for walk cycles, Comedic scenes, dramatic or emotional scenes, and even fight scenes, in Western animation, people do a lot of key frames and in-betweens to get the poses right for the scenes. in anime, only a few expressive key frames and in-betweens are made for scenes if necessary.
since the animator herself is working on an American animated show, she's done layouts for Studio Trigger, who do the overseas animation for the series, but the Koreans mostly do the overseas animation for the series.
