I'm so sad they made this 3D in the Rebuild. It's just so much more satisfying to watch knowing that it's all hand-drawn.

I mean it WAS key-frame animated in the movie too (By Honda no less), they just composited it with overlaid cg models for some shots. Even Ramiel in those movies has 2d genga work for it so I think they key animated alot of it.

So they just used the CG models to make the actions themselves smoother, since the EVAs are so detailed?

The way Unit-01 runs with its fists closed and Unit-00 has a slight wobble in it's step when it takes off, it feels like the characters personalities are coming through in the Eva's movements. I hope I'm explaining that alright.
