The sakugabooru now supports webm! 04/05/2014 Update: Now includes mp4!
Today our trusty admin aers has added webm support to the sakugabooru!

You can now upload your favourite animated cuts in the webm video format, with much smaller file sizes and better image quality than gif could ever hope to achieve.

Just remember, keep with the same rules we have for gifs. Don't upload content with fansubs and try to keep the video resolution the same aspect ratio as the original (4:3 & 16:9).

A few other things to note:

  • webm is natively supported on Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera. Other browsers will require 3rd party addons.
  • This one is obvious but, don't upload entire episodes of shows.
  • Do not make video files larger than 480p in resolution, we want to have content viewable on most screens.
  • Try to keep the bitrate high, we don't want videos with compression artefacts. It may take a bit of experimentation to find the right balance.
  • Most importantly, strip the audio & subtitles from your file since we don't allow webm videos with audio (or subs) in them.
  • Currently the booru only supports the vp8 codec for webm files.
Uploading webm is not mandatory, you can still continue to upload gifs. It's just now we have a way to have quality uploads in a format that's not 20 years old.

04/05/2014 Update: We now support the mp4 container. Much like webm, files uploaded with audio will be denied. Same rules as above apply.

  • For now we only support mp4 files encoded with the 8bit h264 codec. Sorry 10bit.
Um, I can't seem to get it to work for me.

See, I was trying to upload something (one of the Orguss cuts) in that format, and it got rejected (had to settle with the standard gif format instead).
Did you have audio included?

Nope. It was all silent.
Can you upload the clip to mediafire or some other host so I can take a look?
Don't have it anymore, but I can give you a test clip.
Never mind the previous problem, but here's a new one: Why does it say "Image load failed" when I try to upload a webm file (case in point: http://i863.photobucket.com/albums/ab193/philipnova798/Imglodfail.png ).
Oh, just ignore that message.

Okay. Oh, and how do you make webm videos continuous (or autoplay, whatever)?
The site will make them autoplay and loop, you don't have to worry about it.

Thanks for the answer. But now I have another problem...

It's about ways to make webm videos. As the way I would have made them doesn't want to work for me.

This guide was made with 4chan file limits in mind, but it's worth a look.
for those who use Virtualdub : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLkH9Er0u4Y
I hate video tutorial and this one is kinda awful but it still explains what to do. Now you can open any filetype with a plugin (you don't need to create avisynth script anymore) and you can directly export as .webm
Added info about mp4 support :)
I have a question, can Avidemux 2.6.8 export videos? Because I can't seem to find that option on that version of the program.

I don't know for 2.6.8 but with 2.5 I use markers to cut the parts I don't need then save > save video > filename.mp4

That's what I do too. But there's a file that only seems to work with the most recent version (the video only appears as a solid green in 2.5 for some reason). Hence why I'm asking the question.
To follow up on my previous post: Is anyone else having an issue with opening mkv files in 2.5? This is what I'm getting: http://i863.photobucket.com/albums/ab193/philipnova798/Error.png.

So is this a normal occurrence with this program? Or am I managing to do something wrong and I don't know it?
I think it it's a normal occurence since 2.5 is getting old & mkv can contain various codecs. 2.5 can read some .mkv but I couldn't read some files. Maybe try to open it with an other version older than 2.6.
That's why I now use Virtualdub so I don't have any problems.
Thought I'd ask, but how do you get webm files from Virtualdub?

You've to create a webm.vdprof file. Look at the video I linked earlier http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLkH9Er0u4Y
Can we add a rule that says that the files have to be in the native framerate? I see a lot of these webm files like this one (http://sakuga.yshi.org/post/show/5309/animated-beams-debris-effects-genga-hiroshi_okubo-) that have unusual framerates, like 19.8 fps in this case, which creates a pulsing effect that's undesirable.

most things should be done in 24fps, with the exception of some things with only VHS source where we have to use 30fps.
